Planning My College Magazine:
Institution & Ideology:
This magazine will not be published, unlike the deconstructed magazines in this blog, under the orders of the British Government. This means that I will be in charge of what us published on the magazine and therefore would not neccesarily be obliged to feature messages of recycling. I noticed that the government influenced magazine featured many recycling logo's and the front cover featured a main image representing recycling in the garden. However, out of good will, I do intend to feature a recycling logo in order to inform the audience that they can recycle the magazine after use. This ideology is to show that recycling is a good thing. However, it will not feature as my main article. I am also planning on placing an advert in my campaign to help students stop smoking. This ideology will show students that smoking is bad for your health, and there will be a full article on the subject featured in the magazine. This will be reffered to in the masthead, and accompanied by a picture of a carton of cigarrettes, which will be taken by yours truly.
Representation:
The main image on the front cover will be a group photo, taken by me, of my friends. I decided upon featuring my friends because they will be likely to mess about and giggle and smile, which is exactly the look I'm looking for. I have decided upon featuring at least one person from a different ethnic background to most people living in Hull and the surrounding area. I wish for this to represent equality among people from different ethnic backgrounds. The giggling and smiling featured on the image will represent happiness amongst the students at Wyke, which will be emphasised by sunlight. If sunlight does not exist on the day of the photoshoot (considering the fact that we are nearing winter), I will simply manipulate the image to show the same effect. I am looking to exclude a certain minority (chavs as they are commonly labelled) from any images, or minimise the ammount of pictures in which they feature. I have decided upon this due to the fact that they are regarded, in society, as troublemakers. In order to keep the ideology of Wyke college being a friendly, happy place of study, I had to decide upon leaving them out of the magazine. I am, of course, in no way prejudiced against 'chavs', but I had to think of the target audience which is simply people who wish to learn in a safe, happy environment.
Target Audience:
The target audience of my magazine will be college students who may, or may not, be studying at Wyke college. If they are not currently at Wyke (it may be difficult for them to acquire a copy) the intent is for them to be considering on studying at Wyke, effectively advertising the college. The magazine will feature articles about life at Wyke and upcoming events which may be of interest to the Wyke populace. It will also feature events outside the college such as half-price tickets to nightclubs and some, therefore targeting people who get out more. It will be equally targetting both male and female and fulfill both their needs.
Narrative:
Strangely enough, my magazine front cover will feature a narrative. It will basically be telling the story of college life, in one picture. It will connotate that studying at Wyke is very fulfilling and fun; there will not be a single dull day. I am hoping to represent this by having one person holding a folder, with a piece of paper just coming into sight on the top of the folder, showing a grade A* marked piece of work. This will be in the background, and will not be completely 'in-your-face'. This will also fall under the category of mise en scene.
